Right then...I've begun the 3rd album (the follow-up to 'Speak For Yourself'). I'm going to write a more frequent blog as I did with the last one so you can keep an eye on me and make sure I'm not slacking! I wonder how it's gonna turn out? How exciting! You're very welcome to comment but please don't ask me questions on here or i'll never get any work done. You can email me with any questions you have and every month we'll pick 20 from the virtual 'hat' and post them. Send your questions to: [email protected]

Much much more to come! Love, fluv x i x Wheeeeee!!!

The next day

Hello peeps,

Sooooo...the next day...after "Click joy" I trotted down to the basin of the Gorge reserve with my ipod, notebook and pen. I nestled on the wall, legs dangling amongst scattered children and lovers in the sun. This is where I wrote the 2nd half of the 1st vesre of Click Joy so I went back to see if there was anything still there for me I may still be able to squeeze out.

Here's a clip of me at the spot.
my_spot.mov

For about 6 months I've had the makings of a song's melody and chords I really like lolling about in my head. On the last US tour I would keep coming back to it and playing it during soundchecks. It's pretty dark and heavy. I've been eager to finish it as I really loved what it was already. When I was in Maui, I settled on the key and structure and recorded the idea with my one mic on the piano so I could work on it out here, as there's no piano at the cottage. So I was listening to it and listening to it...and before long it started pouring out. The chorus sings "Things are not always as they seem". With references in the verse to the world view that once the earth was flat, that we may not actually be at the centre of everything and that our big ball of beautiful matter spins round the sun. This is at surface level. The undercurrent is something that's been bothering me for a while, so I guess my subconscious has been busy at it while I've been doing other things. I love songs that just seem to pop out like that. Not many come about like that. Speeding cars and Hide and seek did...so you can see why i'm excited about this one. I haven't exactly nailed the title yet but the W.I.P title is "Polyfiller". Surprisingly that does make sense when you hear the whole song but I'm not convinced that it makes a good title. We'll see.

So then yesterday...I was feeling like I was on a roll and decided...if I can write a whole song in a day surely I can place the last remaining pieces of the "Little Bird" puzzle. And low and behold....one bowl of cereal at 10am, turn on the laptop and before you know it, you're starving, it's 6pm but...you've cracked it!

I love making lists. And here's the latest

Wait it out
Swoon
Little Bird
Click Joy
Polyfiller

Completely not expecting to have done all that in the last few days I am kind of at a loss as to what to do next. I was thinking I may get my field recording get up and go sample the sounds of Launceston. My favourite are the possoms in the roof above my kitchen ceiling. What a racket! I was really worried that something was dying in there but I've been reassured this is quite normal for them and people here just put up with it. They make a HUGE, terrifying sound for something so seemingly fluffy and cute. I also love the sounds that the pedestrian crossings make. I think that could be the beginning of the next song. Just as the ceiling fans in the Fijian appartment became the start of Click Joy. Then there's the "night sounds". When cars quieten down and make way for other noises. I will also go and get some Gorge samples. Especially that spot I was in. Maybe just the sound of it will work if I listen to it again? Worth a try for the next lyrical dry patch crisis.

Love, fluv to you all.
Be in touch soon. xxxx

Polyfiller sounds like an AMAZING song, as do the rest. So thrilled with your successes! Whee, plural!! Have fun. :)

gorge samples: good for what ails ya ;).

Its interesting that my daughter told me about you only a couple of days ago, and I found Hide and Seek and loved it - from a compositional point of view it also fascinated me. And now you're in my home country Australia. So I am fascinated by your writing techniques, can you elaborate more on how you put together arrangements and samples, and anything else to do with sound.

cheers
Mark

This blog is fantastic! It's amazing following the creation of the album and I have no doubt it'll make listening to the final product so much better, knowing what it took to get there.

Being Australian, I'm sure I'll be listening carefully trying to extract the 'Australian' samples from them - could be fun.

Possums do have that crazy noise thing down—it's not especially fun when they're doing that on a bedroom roof when you're attempting to sleep, though.

Hey Immi,

I'm very excited about your recent burst of productive song writing. I'm Australian too and am a little worried that you are considering sampling what I assume are the walking signal sounds at intersections. Mind you, if anyone can turn that into a musical element, you can :)

As an aside, my friend was just telling me today that he knows someone who can do a pretty flawless imitation of that sound - I was impressed of course!

All the very best, let me know when your touring Sydney/Brisbane!!!

Jonathan Vogt.

Sounds great!
Already really excited about the new album!

If you ever get chance try and go to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The sounds out there are amazing. I have a few recorded on my mini disc and strange as it is, I sometimes chill out to them.

I want to go out there again, but just sunny uk for now.

*goes and pust SFY*
have fun!

Hi! good luck on the rest of your trip! So exciting to keep up with it all. I'm sure the next song is tumbling inside the 'ol noggin', gettin' ready to pour out! peace and blessings, always

Its so much fun to sit here and listen to what you have going on in your head while you write this album--Im pretty much enthralled.

That song about the earth reminds of when you can think it all revolves around you, only to find that you're spinning about, looking at something else you've realized is actually in the center--and in everyone else's focus. I guess things aren't always as they seem :) I'm still poking at the title... can't make a guess quite yet ("many filler"... "much filler"? filler? hmm). Cool name though.

Keep blogging to us! Im glad you sprung a leak on one of your creative pipes. Can't wait to hear from you again.

Hi! I'm pretty excited I stumbled across your blog...was just looking for confirmation that there was indeed a new album in the works (pssst....I cannot wait!).

Keep up the great work!

~Carly

OMG imm's in Australia  this blog is so interesting ^-^ cant wait for the album to be released, I just wonder how many songs you are plaining to write and where are you plaining to travel to next?

Hi Immi,

I really came accros your homepage by coincident - searching for more info about your fantastic music - I was really swept away of your Frou Frou-period ... first song I heard was "Breathe in" ( great song ) but was immediate captured by songs like "Dumbing Down Of Love" and "Flicks" - great great stuff thanks to your magnificent voice ... well to be honerst I didn't know that you went solo after Frou Frou .. so I was very happy a month ago when I realized that there actually were two solo-albums ... life is kind :o)) WELL .. I am so into both albums now and inpetecular the song "Hide And Speek" - I have never heard a stronger and more honerst song.. you really have captured something unique in this song .. WELL I must get to the point here ... just want to add that it's great news that you are working on a 3rd album ... and it's very nice to follow your workprocedures and thoughts in the Blog. Looking forward for more updates from the Gorge.

Kind regards from a danish fan - Peter Vang

Sorry ... I meant " Hide and Seek " ;o)

That song sounds awesome, Immi! Your spot is beautiful. I've always wanted to try writing song lyrics, but never actually gotten around to it... maybe I'll take a leaf out of your book and go somewhere beautiful, take a pen and paper and just... write. Once again, Immi, you are INSPIRATIONAL! Have fun/Good luck/All those other things that i'm going to say again in my next comment. (But I mean them every time! Honest!)
