Decided to take a stab at the lyrics, there's a fair bit of guesswork involved here but I figured we could all work together and figure out just HOW wrong I am Smile

------------------------------------------------------------------

Bodies disengage, our mouths are fleshing over
is this an echo gain
irises retreat into ovals of white
the urge to fill your face in blood rushing to paint my hand print
and frisbee one by one your vinyl on laminate
desperate for some kind of contact

*chorus*

temporal dead zone where clocks are barely breathing
yet no one cares to notice for all their yamming on
I clam up to hold it together
want to Play-Doh wave forms in the hideaway
want to get on with getting on with things
want to run in fields, paint the kitchen, love someone
I can't do any of that here, can I

*chorus*

so what you've had one too many
so what I'm not that much fun to be with
so what you've got a silly hat on
so what I didn't want to come here anyway

what matters to you
doesn't matter, matter to me
what matters to me
doesn't matter, matter to you
what matters to you
it doesn't matter, matter to them
what matters to them
it doesn't change anything

*chorus*

------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit - a few corrections, courtesy of desired_wasteland
Another edit - more corrections, thanks to repeated listenings and hauak being smarter than me Smile
And another - hopefully the last round of corrections, major thanks to all you clever people!

PLEASE PUT SPOILER ALERT IN YOUR HEADING!

these are the most recent correct version:

Sorry. I think (hear) that Furkel's version is closer to the actual lyrics.

I think she says 'hand print'. Meaning she has the urge to slap his face and see the red mark of her hand on it. Nice!

I dunno, think d_w might have fixed a few of my mistakes, that line in the second verse DOES sound more like "play-doh wave forms", which also makes kind of sense... and I'm very unsure about the fact that "yamming" isn't a word as far as I'm aware, though it doesn't quite sound like "yearning" either. Meh!

Though I daresay I'm pretty sure I got this line right, and it's the most creative way ever of saying "I want to throw your records on the floor" Smile

I'm pretty sure it is 'yamming' not 'yearning'. I've never heard the word 'yamming', but 'yammering' is a fairly common expression (in England, and in some social groups) for 'talking aimlessly' - much the same as 'wittering'. So I guess that either Immi has abbreviated 'yammering' for the sake of the rhythm, or some people do in fact use 'yamming' with the same meaning.

[Added after writing the above: I just Googled 'yammering' and got this.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/yammering

I also Googled 'yamming', for which the 'Urban Dictionary' gives several meanings, most of which are obscene;

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=yamming

^I was thinking yammering makes more sense too, and it does sound familiar.

Btw, I've re-listened to First Train Home and realized that parts of Furkel's are more correct. The main one being replacing "contest" with "contact."

This is my interpretation of the lyrics... I've made a couple corrections, courtesy of you guys, and now I'm pretty sure they're spot on... Please correct me if I'm wrong! Smile

First Train Home - Imogen Heap

Got to get on it, got to get on it, got to get on it.

Bodies disengage; our mouths are fleshing over (over, over, over, over)…
Is this an echo gain? Irises retreat into ovals of white… The urge to feel your face in blood, rushing to paint my handprint, and Frisbee one by one your vinyl on laminate, desperate for some kind of contact.

First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. To catch, to catch, to catch-catch-c-catch… The first train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home…

Da dum-da deyo, deyo, da deyo… Da dum-da deyo, deyo, da dey…

Temporal dead zone, where clocks are barely breathing (breathing, breathing, breathing)… Yet no one cares to notice for all they’re yamming on, I clam up to hold it together… I want to Play-Doh waveforms in the Hideaway, I want to get on with getting on with things… I want to run in fields, paint the kitchen, and love someone and I can’t do any of that here, can I?

First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home, I’ve got to get on it. First train home…

So what, you’ve had one to many… So what, I’m not that much fun to be with… So what, you’ve got a silly hat on… So what, I didn’t want to come here anyway…

What matters to you, doesn’t matter-matter to me… What matters to me, doesn’t matter-matter to you… What matters to you, doesn’t matter-matter to them… What matters to them, it doesn’t change anything…

Got to get on it, first train home, got to get on it, first train home…

First train home, I’ve got to get on it. (To catch, to catch, to catch-catch-c-catch…) First train home. (First train home, I’ve got to get on it, first train home…) First train home…

Got to, got to, got to, got to get, get, get, get out, out, out, out now, now, now, now.

I'm still horribly unsure about this one line, because it KINDA sounds like she's saying something else but I can't figure out what it could possibly be and the echo game thing makes sort of sense anyway, so... I dunno. But apart from that and the whole yearning / yamming conundrum, I'd say we've more or less got it Smile

those lyrics are like reading a story of my life at this present moment in time.

i seem to be running a parallel with immi's life a couple of years ago.

The onomatopoeia in First Train Home is utterly intense. Does anyone recall Imogen doing this in earlier work? I have something in mind but can't quite put my finger on exactly what song it might be. Could this be a new element of her evolving style? Maybe it's just this tune, but, man-oh-man, those train sounds - like an old steam engine - are enormous.

Definitely 'yamming' not 'yearning'.

Still not sure about the 'echo game' line.

Will Immi issue a lyric sheet with the album to put us out of our misery?

Maybe she should follow the example of T. S. Eliot, who published 'The Waste Land' with explanatory notes!

Well done to whoever worked out the vinyl on laminate line! It confused me for a while but now I remember Imogen mentioning to me that the club where she was at was playing really crap music so it makes sense that she would want to throw the records on the floor!

One line that I disagree is "I clamour/clamber to hold it togther" - I reckon it's "I clam up to hold it together". It seems to make more sense?

Anyway - a brilliant song none the less!

Also - I think it's - "The urge to FILL your face in blood, rushing to paint my hand print" maybe?

after a lot of thinking, and listening to it for countless times, I've decided that the lyrics are definitely "for all their yamming on" and "I clam up to hold it together".

i have made both of those changes to my lyrics post above! Smile thank you all!
