Yes you definitely may use it.

I took those shots with a Canon A95, which was lent to me from a very kind friend. The camera that I had for the Nov/Dec '06 tour broke from all that heavy usage.....and other reasons. |

My friend and I go to college in the Albany, NY area and are really big fans of Imgen. When we heard about the NYC iMegaphone show at The Box, we got really excited and bought tickets. The day of, we left around 1PM to drive to NYC so that we definitely wouldn't miss the concert because of bad weather (we had a massive storm the night before) or anything else. After a 3-4 hour drive, we arrived in the city and killed time before the show. When we got to the venue, I presented my ID at the box office and picked up the will-call tickets, and we waited in line to be let in.
Here's where things went downhill. We were pulled aside as the bouncer checked our IDs and were informed, to our complete shock, that the show was 21 and older. My friend and I are both 19. However, I do not recall having ever seen, in the process of learning about the show and getting tickets, that the show was limited to 21 and up. It was not on her website or MySpace, the venue's website had no information about the shows, I (nor anyone else who had looked at it) remember it being on the TicketWeb site, and it wasn't on the order confirmation that was sent to me after I purchased the tickets.
The owner of the club and a woman who said she represented the promoter came out and after listening to our story told us that, unfortunately, there was absolutely no way to let us into the show, even though we offered to pay a cover charge and mark our hands (or anything else) so that it was obvious we couldn't drink. What's more, we were told that we couldn't get a refund. The promoter said that the ticketing website had a pop-up that informed me of the age restriction before I could buy the tickets, and while it's possible that I could've skipped something like that in my excitement to get tickets, I certainly don't remember it and was unable to check it since the had gone down by the time I got to computer.
I'm wondering if it's standard for Imogen to work with promoters that clearly don't care about her fans or the show, but simply the money involved. While the bar owner said that he "apologizes profusely" (rather without sincerity) and that he has been in our shoes, both he and the promoter seemed perfectly happy to take our money and throw us to the street. I bitterly left our tickets at the box office, instructing the person working there to give them away to the next person who tried to buy tickets, and we left to start the multiple hour ride back home.
So at the end of the day, we had spent over $150 between tickets, service charges, gas money, and tolls, and 9+ hours of our lives to be turned away because the club owner assumed my friend and I to be a pair of miscreants more concerned with getting booze than seeing Imogen perform and couldn't mark our hands with marker (or the sharpie I had in my pocket as I suggested) like at any other bar/venue and the promoter didn't take the effort to make the age restriction a little more obvious during advertising (if the information had been there at all).
I feel cheated, wronged, and highly disinclined to try to come to one of Imogen's concerts again, despite that she's one of my favorite musicians. While I don't expect anyone to listen, care, or do anything about this, I just feel that my experience needed to be put out there somehow. I hope no one else has had to put up with something like this.

Wow I would be so pissed. It's not Immi's fault. The majority of clubs out there has jerks for owners/bouncers. It's almost rare to find a venue that is actually understanding. |

i can really understand your frustration right now , orions glory !
this whole "over 21" thing is jus' plainly ridiculous - like the prohibition laws were back in the days too !
luckily enough in germany there aren't such overzealous laws & restrictions anymore & people can drink & go to concerts on their own , when they are 18 !
anyway ... i think that this age restriction thing shoud've been flagged up much better in especially this case of very special concerts for all the fans !
jus' my measly two cents of the euro here ... |

Orion--
I understand your frustration and I too got screwed over by ticketweb out of a bit of money (whenever i get around to talking about my show experience i'll explain more), and on top of that I had my car stolen (i'll explain that too). However, on the ticketweb site the agreement did state that the venue was 21 and over...we actually talked about it in two other topics quite a bit (http://www.imogenheap.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5647&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=90) because there were several fans who were upset they couldn't go, a few who decided they were going to try and get fake IDs, etc.
The venue managers were pretty strict (ridiculously so) about all of their rules. And although I was very glad to be attending her shows, i would have to say that the venue was certainly not one of my favorites (though I loved the decor and history and whatnot). if she performs there again (or Avalon, Boston) I won't be buying tickets. But you have to expect that some venues are not going to care so much about the musician or their fans (decidely un-immi), and I think it is good to relate your experiences just in case...you never know how much it will weigh when it comes to booking venues for the next tour, or at the very least awareness for others who read this.
But I just think it would be unfortunate for you to never attend an immi concert--as she's at her best live, imho. |

| The photos are great, and I'm sorry the hear about the 21 and over problems, but can someone post a real review for those of us who couldn't make it? What was the sent list? What did she do for enores? Did she do any non- iMegaphone songs like maybe "leave me to love" or "pocket sun"? Did she talk about anthing interesting? How was the audience? Was it packed? |

Through an ironic twist of fate, I was able to stay in New York Thursday night and catch the late show at The Box. Here's a brief summary of some of the night's pertinent facts and my observations.
The Set List
As noted elsewhere, Immi performed iMegaphone in its entirety, in order.Getting Scared
Sweet Religion
Oh Me, Oh My
Shine
Whatever
Angry Angel
Candlelight
Rake It In
Come Here Boy
Useless
Sleep The encore songs were:The Words
Immi introduced each song with a short anecdote about how she came to write it, with at least half of them having something to do with one boyfriend or another. I imagine the stories and banter were the mostly the same as in the prior three shows. I don't have notes on each song, sorry.
During "Whatever", there was a thump-thump of someone knocking on a door at the rear of the stage. She mentioned it, laughed, and then continued the show. The knocking came again at the end of "Angry Angel" and she asked, "should I answer the door?" It was funny. Someone from the venue staff went and opened it up - I don't know the story, but a guy from outside came in and went up the rear stairs to the balcony.
When Immi returned to the stage for the encore, she brought Gary the Grammy Frog with her. After she introduced him to the audience, she told us that the Grammy people are building a Grammy Museum and they have asked her for the infamous "lily pond" dress, which she agreed to donate. But she's keeping Gary.
Immi also mentioned she was going to start on her next album in May. She said she hoped it wouldn't take as long as the last one, and that she definitely learned some lessons from that experience.
The Audience
I'd say the place was packed, but not uncomfortably so. There looked like comfy seating up front, then the side walls were lined with booths. There are two aisles leading from back to front, and I think there were tables and chairs set up in between the aisles. There was also balcony seating, but I didn't go up there so I don't know if there were tables or what. Every seat on the main floor was taken, both aisles were full of people standing, and I think there were also people sitting on the floor down in front.
The audience seemed to match the occasion, listening, laughing, applauding after each song. They definitely showed fond respect for Immi, and I, for one, enjoyed the performance in rapt adoration. (what? who said that?) There was a curtain separating the bar from the performance space. I didn't notice any sound at all from the bar area the whole evening, until the encore. Immi had left the stage, and of course chatter drifted in from the bar. As I recall, it didn't stop as she returned and played the last two songs. That was a little annoying. I was seated at a reserved booth along the right-hand wall about halfway back from the stage, and the bar chatter was almost nonexistent, to my ears. Also, I didn't hear anyone singing along loudly as Immi sang, which I think has been reported from Speak For Yourself concert reports.
The Venue
As you can see in the photos others have posted, the setting was beautiful. There were candles very artfully arranged around the stage, and overall the lighting was appropriately subdued. The piano (a Baldwin baby grand) looked red under the stage lights. There is a staircase at the back of the stage, and just in general the atmosphere was cozy and intimate. The Box isn't very big, I think there were maybe 200 people there? Somebody correct me if you think I'm way off, I'm notoriously bad at estimating. The balcony is U-shaped, so there were some people in 'box seats' along each side wall. The tables throughout the floor were covered with tablecloths. I found the waitstaff to be very courteous and polite.
The security staff were annoying, as usual. They persistently tried hustling us out as we lingered around in first the performance space and later in the bar area, as we waited for a chance to meet and talk with Immi. In retrospect, they could have been far more pushy, far more surly. I wish they hadn't herded us out like they did, but I am sure the driving factor was that there was a very exclusive $600-a-ticket cabaret/burlesque show going on stage next, and they needed to clear out the riff-raff (that would be us).
I am sympathetic to the under-21 set who couldn't get tickets or couldn't get in. But The Box really couldn't let anyone under 21 into the bar, marked-hands or not, or they could have lost their liquor license, which would have severely curtailed their ability to do business. I don't think they were just being mean. However, I think they definitely should have offered refunds if you were under 21 but had bought a ticket anyhow.
The Night
This was a very special night for me. My delayed flight from LaGuardia airport would have meant missing my connection in Cleveland for the flight home to Denver. With the Presidents Day sold-out travel weekend, there were no options open to me, and so I was stranded in New York for the weekend. But that meant I had a shot at seeing Immi at the very last public performance of the iMegaphone songs. Looking back, I can trace an unlikely chain of events in my life starting weeks ago that ultimately made this possible. I am very grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to TiFF and Mark for helping me.
The subway rides to the venue were simple and fast, but the night air was icy cold. Inside The Box, I had the pleasure of meeting Toasty, DMperdidi and Maggie. I was still in my jacket and tie from my job and initially felt kind of square about it, but on second thought that worked out okay and I didn't really stand out.
This concert was exactly the kind of Immi concert I've been wanting to see and hear since I started listening to her music.
1. solo Immi playing only her piano
2. in an intimate concert setting
3. playing songs I've never heard (I don't have iMegaphone and have only heard 2-3 songs from it)
4. I love the lower end of Immi's vocal range, and that's where iMegaphone lives
I couldn't have asked for a more perfect combination. And on top of all that, this was a unique experience because she hasn't played these songs in so many years and she won't be playing them again. She claimed to be a little emotional that this was the last performance of the four performances this week, and the last time she'd be performing the songs, but she seemed really happy anyway.
From Immi's tidbits about each song, the album overall, and the North American tour she did in support of it, the overall theme for the evening was youth. She kept reminding us of how young she was at the time she wrote and recorded and toured all this material, and she said a couple of times how she wanted to enjoy feeling that young again for that night. I was deeply impressed by her songwriting, piano playing and singing. She's really incredibly talented. In particular, the material is a workout for a singer. She showed off a full dynamic range, including ear-piercing screaming during one song, and her voice remained smooth and strong throughout the evening. I was especially blown away as I constantly reminded myself that this was her second show that night, and here she was, belting out the songs. Number one with a bullet, baby, I'm telling you.
The four of us waited around as long as we could in order to get a chance to meet Immi. I later remarked to Toasty that it was a surprising amount of work to try to get to her, and she said that was highly unusual, and this after-show experience was unlike any she'd seen. She figured it was because there was some industry networking going on. Finally, with Toasty and Mark's help, I did get a chance to meet Immi, shake her hand and introduce myself. She was extremely pleasant and nice. And she's taller than I am. And gorgeous. But I digress.
After I returned from meeting Immi, the security staff really kicked into high gear and shooed us outside into the cold. I said so long to Toasty, DMperdidi, and Maggie and made the walk and subway ride back to my hotel. I felt so, so lucky all the way back. |

Well, I'm not Toasty, but that is the shot from Rake It In
(I'm pretty sure)....I was lucky enough to meet her at the show and get a look at all of her fantastic shots, share several of my 'not as fantastic' shots, and do a little photography geek speak with her. I am a huge fan of her live action photography (partiality to immi aside). I'm curious to know what she could have done with my camera, as I had a much higher optical zoom and could get in really close...
Rake It In during the second set was by far my favorite next to Leave Me to Love...immi really got into the screaming and it was pretty intense. |
