From the opening notes of her last show here in Portland in January at Dante's, I couldn't wait for her return. I got a charge when I saw that she was coming back to the states to play some shows this past May, but I was dismayed when I saw she wasn't playing Portland.
Roll forward to two months ago, and when I checked a website that lists upcoming shows, I saw Immi was coming in December. I remarked out loud excitedly, "OH MY GOD!" My wife went to the Crystal Ballroom box office and got us tickets #18-#21, for us and our two kids.
The show was great. Immi apologized for not being in her best form due to a slight cold, and referred to the same circumstance when she was here last (when she also stated up front that she would do her best then too). Hey, I'll take Immi at 90% any day. She was only slightly affected by it as she came through loud and clear and rocking anyway. It was a somewhat different show this time with her traveling band augmenting her performance on songs here and there. It was nice to have seen her in January, when she put on a more true to the recording performance, and again this time as she took the departure allowed in a live performance to step away from trying to play note for note.
Some months back, in this forum, someone asked if she should bother seeing Imogen live. In her mind, an artist can't create the musical experience live, that one could in the studio and was looking for some assurance that it would be worthy enough to attend. I told her she was overthinking it, and that if she's a fan of Immi's music, she OWES it to herself to see her produce it live. If you're reading this and see yourself as that person did - GO GET TICKETS, if there still are any at the venue near you. You will NOT be disappointed.
The setlist she played in Portland is the same one posted from reviews at her previous stops. I apologize for not having it to list here. When I have tickets to an upcoming show, I seek out the playlist and burn a cd of it and I can't tell you how much more it adds to the experience of hearing it come to life, after listening to it dozens of times through. It was pretty much the same playlist from the January show.
Immi mentioned at the show, as have others here previously, that she will have to stop touring for a bit so she can return to the studio to make "a KILLER album" (I *think* she said album - and the younger generation asks "what's an album?")
As usual with the Crystal, if the concert talkers would just shut the hell up during the performance, it would add measurably to everyone's enjoyment. I'm not talking about the people cheering and yelling at/to the performer, or even the ones who can't help themselves from singing along (guilty here, but respectfully quietly), but the idiots who talk to each other, loudly of course, while there is someone on stage making music.
But... not to end this on that sour note... I hope we get to see Immi at least one more time at a small venue, cause I have a feeling that the rest of the world (i.e. those that don't know her yet) will discover her and she will play the larger concert halls, as is the natural progression.
Immi, we love ya in Portland, Oregon. Safe journeys. |
