I thought the Monday show in Albuquerque was good but fell below my high expectations. The opening acts, introduced (in a welcome touch) by Imogen, were incorporated into Imogen's set so there was very little time spent setting up between acts. (That they joined her onstage during her set was less welcome, they contributed more sound/noise and confusion than anything else.)
Despite the overwhelming power of the sound system, the subtler sounds were hard to hear because of the non-stop chatter of the adolescent audiance. One girl near me babbled loudly to her friends throughout, stopping only to scream "We love you, Imogen!" at ear-crushing levels. I'd have thought someone who "loved" Imogen would have shown enough respect to actually listen to her (and her supporting acts).
Imogen has a beautiful voice and it was especially a pleasure to hear her on her quieter songs, just the piano accompaniment. But her microphone/headset was less than ideal and caused her voice to sound tinny. I was most disappointed by this: such a technologically advanced performer yet with a poor microphone.
The crowd did stop babbling once, during "Hide and Seek" in the encore. Also, during that song, the problems with her microphone did not matter as much. It was a magical moment, the crowd suddenly hushed except for quietly singing along. Imogen finally got the respect from the audience that she deserved all along.
Other problems: the stage design was busy/cluttered without purpose; the lighting cast a diagonal shadow across Imogen's face whenever she sat at the piano (visible in the excellent pictures above); Imogen's comments, including the tour of her equipment were unintelligible...
Overall though, a good show for the twelve dollars. |

| The vocals were buried and I couldn't Levi or the others very well but the fact that her equipment was unintelligent was for our sakes. I'm sure she knows quite a bit about the equipment she uses. It sure did make me mad when those stupid idiots wouldn't shut up during the last few seconds of Hide and Seek even when she told them the shut up. |
