I've just joined this forum recently to get a feel for what Immi is up to, what the live shows are like, links to recordings, etc. So, I will try to make some contribution of my own for others. I'll say up front that I truly enjoyed the show and was very impressed with Immi and the openers, Kid Beyond and Levi Weaver.
I attended the Boston show at Avalon last night and here are random thoughts and rants. For the non-Bostonians out there, Avalon is on Landsdowne Street, which runs immediately behind the left field wall (the "Green Monster") at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Many great home runs hit at Fenway Park have "retired" on Landsdowne Street. There is a row of night clubs on Landsdowne St and it's one of Boston's biggest concentration of night life and a good place to go for anyone visiting. That being said, Avalon is not the best concert venue for several reasons. First, as "immyz" mentioned, it turns into a dance club after the live shows, so everyone (I'm going to guess about 2000 people) gets the bums rush after the live show so they can completely turn over the crowd and get a complete 2nd paying crowd. Everybody out! In defense of Avalon, I would say that only about 1 in 10 people at the show had a drink in their hand, so, after all, it IS a business and, lets face it, those folks make their money selling booze. A beer is $6, so college kids on short money are not going to drink too much. Next, the acoustics are not that good. For dance, who cares? But, for a concert with lots of subtle music and quiet passages, it's not that great. Last rant about Avalon is that there is almost no place to sit down. I have a bum knee and standing for almost three hours was tough.
I "hope" that when Immi gets back to Boston next she can book a better venue. The two places that come to my mind are the Orpheum and the Berklee Performance Center. I suspect that her career will allow her to step up to these slightly larger and much better concert venues.
Someone said "get there early" and they were right. I got into the 6:30 show at 6:45 and Avalon was pretty much full, but more people did arrive in the next half hour. I only got to see Levi Weaver's last two songs and he was pretty good, as openers go. He's a pretty good singer/songwriter who just played guitar and sang. He did some looping and seems like he's not totally got that down yet. The second act, Kid Beyond, on the other hand, makes a living on perfect looping. He's kind of like a current day Bobby McFerrin, using his vocal chords to do all of his "instruments". His "vocal percussion" was truly amazing. Between that and his mastery of the technology, his set was (for me) eye openning and really entertaining.
He has a song that runs in the credits for the new Mission Impossible III movie, so someone thinks he's pretty good
I'm going to keep my comments about Immi's set short, as there are plenty of folks who know her catalog much better than me and I'll leave them to the specifics. In a nutshell, her set was great. There was a vocal feedback problem on the openning song, but that got fixed. There were no other major technical glitches, which I guess have been a problem in the past. There were a couple of times when, setting up for a song, she just hit some key or button by mistake, and some sound would pop out. Those were actually pretty funny and she took them in stride and had a chuckle, or two, herself. In the second song, "Headlock", the backing band came out and, maybe it's just me, but I thought that her vocals just got buried by the Kid Beyond "persussion". She's got a very subtle voice and his vocal stylings are more of the sledgehammer variety. While I can see what they are trying to do in the live act, I think it could be mixed better. It was not as bad in subsequent songs with the backing band (they were on and off stage, depending on the song). She is using a headset mike and I had a very hard time hearing her comments between songs. I hope they can fix that for future performances. Part of that problem is that she is soft spoken (not a Seinfeldian "low talker"). Maybe they could mix that "up" for her comments and adjust for the songs. One of the highlights of the show, for me, was that in a couple of songs the audience would be softly singing the song's lyrics, and doing a pretty good job of it. The most notable example of this was the classic Frou Frou "Let's Go". Probably my favorite song of the night was "Daylight Robbery". I love the quiet stuff, but this song was the true ass kicker of the entire set. The entire band rocked out and the club was shaking. Very nice. The set ended at 9:30 and I believe the playlist was identical to the ones posted for the shows in Canada.
Never having seen Immi live before - except for the TV appearances -, I was interested in what her stage presence would be like. She is so interesting.
In a live show, her presence is as eclectic as her songs. I would not have thought I would see "funky", but I did. She is like a character from Lewis Carroll and a whirling dervish, at the same time. She is charming, funny,
and very, very busy. She introduces her "electronic" band, which is very funny. Her technological presentation requires that she is frequently moving from one instrument to another and, when the opportunity arrises, she dances out to center stage and is very delightful. She did say that she hoped to have a new album out "in the new year". So, I'm assuming that means some time in 2007. She then laughing added that she needed "to get started on that". I will look forward to that )
I met a few nice people at the show At one point I turned around and there was a nice young lady who was considerably shorter than I am and I had a pretty good line of sight where I was standing, so I let her get in front of me so she could see the stage and not be stuck with a view of my back. She was pretty happy about that. After the show I was on the "T" Green Line and I got sardined next to a guy who said he had come up from Florida to see the show. Now THAT's a good fan. He seemed very happy.
One other thing that I would like to add is that I recorded most of the show with a little Olympus digital voice recorder. It's a new toy for me and I will try to get that file posted in the next couple of days. I only took a couple of pictures with my cell phone and they are nothing special. There had to be 50-100 people with all kinds of cameras shooting throughout the show, so they will hopefully post up some pix. I am planning to post the file on xdrive.com and, if you've never seen that site you should check it out. They give 5GB of free storage for posting video, audio, an images. Free.
I got to enjoy a truly great show last night. Cheers to Immi and the band and best luck to them on the tour!
Cheers,
Bill |

So I just saw Immi for the first time last night at the Avalon. I missed her show at the Paradise earlier in the year so I was sooo excited for tonight. I thought the entire show was fantastic.
I got to the theatre around 5:30 and was well back in the line. Luckily I got in pretty quickly and managed to snag a seat on one of those partitions near the stage, on the side. The theatre filled up pretty quickly after that, and soon it was wall to wall standing people. I was very happy that the show started on time, and that Immi introduced the opening acts. She really seemed to have a lot of respect for both of the guys.
Levi Weaver definitely has a great future. His voice is raspy but powerful and when he loops his harmonies are beautiful. I thought his cover of Radiohead's "Idioteque" was the highlight, as his original songs rambled a bit, but he's definitely talented and I would pay to see him again in the future.
Kid Beyond was seriously..."beyond" anything I had ever seen before. His vocal percussion is out of this world, but he also has a strong voice that mixes nicely with his beatboxing when he loops them. I loved his original song "Mothership," he really got the crowd going and everyone seemed to love his set.
When Immi came out about 15 minutes after Kid's set was over, she started with "I Am In Love With You" and continued with "Just For Now" and "Headlock." She seemed so friendly and down to earth as she introduced her "electronic band" and her real band (which included her drummer, bass player, and Levi and Kid). It was also so funny how she responded to comments from the crowd, especially when a guy yelled "I love you Immi!" She played a good mix of songs from "Speak for Yourself" and others, like "Let Go," "Come Here Boy," and "Speeding Cars." I think she ended up playing every song from "Speak for Yourself," and highlights for me were "Loose Ends," "The Walk," and a less-electronic version of "Clear the Area." There was a bit of a feedback issue at first, but that was quickly fixed and overall I thought the sound was great for a club show. I could always hear Immi clearly and her voice is truly incredible in person. I don't think she hit a bad note the whole night, even when she was fiddling with her computers, keyboards, and dancing around.
People kept screaming for her to do "Hide and Seek" but she kept teasing and saved that for her first encore, which was absolutely fantastic. When the crowd was singing along with her softly, it really was a pretty ethereal sound. Then she brought the band back out for "Daylight Robbery," which basically brought the house down. It was everything I had imagined the song could be live. She finished the night with "The Moment I Said It," which is my favorite song from her new album, so I was so glad when she finally played it! I loved that the last song really showed Immi's true talents; her voice, piano skills, and how she gets emotionally invested in the songs. What a great way to end the night!
Overall, the concert was everything I wanted to be. I now have even more respect for Immi as an artist and can't wait to see her live again! |

A very nice and imaginative review, but .....
"Immi’s screeching “LIAR!” note in the middle of “Loose Ends” beautifully broke nearly every glass container behind the bar."
Do you really expect people to be dumb enough to buy this? Avalon has had - for years - many, many acts that have been a lot louder than Imogen Heap and if their liquor bottles were breaking when things got loud they would not be in business. A little sugar coating can go a long way, but too much is bad for your teeth. |

I'm sure it was just meant as an expression, not as an actual fact! |

As James said, it was an expression, not a fact...but regardless, it's not the volume of the act that would make a difference anyway when it comes to glass breaking. A little acoustics 101. |

It was a fantasy. That's what it was. And, not stated as such. If people want to hero worship, that's all fine and good. But, please don't insult us by stating said fantasy as part of a review, which, by definition, should be factual and not contrived.
A little acoustics 101 would state that the correct resonant frequency, coupled with some minimum sound intensity (i.e. volume, or loudness), for a certain minimum period, are what's required to break glass. It would be abundantly clear to anyone that attended that show that at least two of those conditions were not met. The only reason that I questioned this fantasy in the first place was that it was so ridiculous. You are welcome to label it as an "expression" or whatever you want, but it was irresponsible, at best.
It would have been a great review had the author been just a bit more rigorous with the truth. Journalism is littered with examples of authors, reporters, writers, and others who found out the hard way that sticking with the truth - and only the truth - would have kept them their credibility and, in many cases, their jobs. If you don't care about the truth, then you get what you deserve. |

Here's a brief moment of Imogen Heap in concert at Avalon Boston 11/11/06.
I was stopped from taking any more photos or video although at least 25 more people were shooting photos and video around me.
http://stevegarfield.blogs.com/videoblog/2006/11/imogen_heap_at_.html
We got to Avalon at 7:45 and it was totally packed.
We worked our way up to the very front right hand side and stood behind some people in front of a pole. Good old obstructed view, just like the old Boston Garden.
We were standing in front of a roped off area and it turned out that it was where Immi appeared from back stage.
I looked over and she said hi to me.
"Hi!", I replied.
She then started to walk into the crowd!
After 20 seconds she turned back and then went back where she entered from and went on stage. She wanted to walk onto the stage from the audience. That couldn't happen. Too many people and there was a huge fenced barrier seperating the floor from the stage.
The brilliant thing about Immi is that she can sing and play acoustically. I saw her in Boston 6 years ago with just a piano in Cambridge.
I was glad to hear her do something similar for a few songs, without all the electronics.
Some of the electronics and accompaniment overpowered her voice, although we all know she has a powerful voice.
I was happy that I got a chance to see the concert.
Next time I'd like to see her in a hall with seating and also have her on stage longer so she can have time to talk to us and tell stories.
See you next time,
--Steve |

rene- i really liked your review. i felt the same way in many instances. i did see you at the show, but it was so hectic and crowded. also, my friend that was with me had broken her ankle, so we were hesitant about venturing far from our seats for fear of someone stepping on meri's poor foot. i'm glad you got to talk to immi after the show. we waited for a good while with toasty (it was so nice to meet you!) and her friends but i didn't want meri to have to stand any longer so we hailed a cab and made our way back to the hotel...only to turn around and see immi standing on the other side of her tour bus! i was a bit gutted because i wanted to tell her how fantastic i thought she looked, sounded...everything!
i couldn't believe how much the show had evolved in a mere 10 months! the stage was amazing..the piano was probably one of the coolest things i'd ever seen, and immi looked so very pretty. the opening acts were awesome and i thought their support throughout the show was very cool. i do agree with whomever said that they thought kid beyond's sound did drown our precious immi out a bit.
every performance was awesome. immi has a great stage presence. i do wish we could have heard what she was saying between songs though...even straining my ear i couldn't make out some of immi's comments about things. she is a very funny lady.
i just love immi's live version of 'clear the area'. it made my heart skip a beat it was so beautiful. other highlights for me was 'closing in' (my 1st fav off of S4Y), 'come here boy', and, 'the moment i said it'. that song is a beautiful way to end a fantastic show. words fail me when trying to convey what i think and feel about immi's music. seeing her live is such a treat. who wouldn't want to support an artist who appreciates her fans so much?
we met a lovely couple while standing in line in front of the avalon. 'hello' to john and caroline if you make your way to this thread at some point! i think john made caroline an immi fan both in philly and now in boston...we always meet the nicest people at immi's shows. boston was a fantastic place to visit.
can't wait for the next tour. immi is a great reason to plan a weekend getaway!
-i might also add that it was awesome to meet sammyj and xanthuos! nothing cooler than meeting fellow iBabblers in the flesh! |

I agree that Kid Beyond was mixed a little louder this time around, but I want people to know that him "drowning out" Immi hasn't been a regular occurance...so fear not when you make a pilgrimage to one of Immi's shows!
bdrake - it was great meeting you as well! |

Thanks for posting that review, spin.
"Like a plate spinner constantly attending to the objects she set in motion, she rarely stayed in one place, hopping from device to device to trigger the next loop or create it on the fly."
How apt! Never thought of it that way... |

spin156 said this about immi's performance: Quote: She is like a character from Lewis Carroll and a whirling dervish, at the same time. She is charming, funny,
and very, very busy. which i thought was a brilliant way to describe her. |

Thanks for your kind comment. Of course, the Lewis Carroll reference was not much of a stretch when you consider the "Goodnight and Go" cover. I was a little surprised at the Globe reviewer's comments about the plate spinning. She is, in many cases, in constant motion. But, that's certainly part of her charm, in my opinion. He also made almost the same Bobby McFerrin comparison as me. I guess we had some similar thoughts on the show )
The thing that was totally enlightening about seeing her live was that she uses very few "canned" samples and actually "builds" her songs live, and on the fly. It's pretty impressive. Watching Kid Beyond was kind of a tutorial for her act. Maybe I need to get out more |

ah yes, immi and the white rabbit . immi's a most dynamic performer, that's very true; constant motion seems to suit her.
i agree about not using canned samples...immi's shows are highly organic, and no two are ever quite the same. she does rather construct her songs on the fly, doesn't she? i guess most musicians do, but the way immi layers things and pulls it all together is like watching a genius architect at work. |

The Avalon show was my third Immi concert, the other two being The Canal Room in NYC, and The Paradise in Boston. On the down-side, I have to say that the staff of the Avalon were rather rude; it's one thing to have a giant venue with nowhere to sit, it's quite another to chase paying customers around saying "Don't stand here" and "You can't stand there". My other complaint is that the headset microphone Immi sang through didn't have much of a 'pop' filter on it, so every time she sang a word which contained a 'b', 'd', or 'p', a giant BOOM was emitted. Not such a big deal on the louder tunes, but it was very distracting on the quiet ones;
i.e. "There's (BOOM)eauty in the (BOOM)reakdown..."
Also, the first two times I saw her, she was out meeting the fans within minutes of finishing the last encore, but this time - after being unceremoniously driven out of the hall like cattle - I waited an hour and a half before giving up.
Having said all that, I still had a great time. I was really happy to hear "Speeding Cars" in the set, and "Daylight Robbery" with the live band was just fantastic. As mentioned above, the audience singing gently along on the quiet bits was genuinely moving; my wife was actually in tears a couple of times!
Regarding other venues in Boston where she might play, The Orpheum has better sight-lines (no obstructions), but is notorious for its terrible acoustics. I saw Iggy Pop there, and it sounded like he was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon! I'd really like to see her do two nights (or three!) at The Paradise again, the sound was excellent, the vibe more intimate, and at the end, she sat right on the edge of the stage and talked for hours with the fans, signing autographs and taking photos!
