I missed Immi first time around, so this was my first time seeing her. I have read other people talk about her presence or her spirit (whatever you want to call it) when she performs, and there is truth in these statements.
Seeing Immi live gives you a palpable, positive feeling. Like when someone does something kind for you without asking. You just feel good. Maybe even euphoric. She definitely has that "thing" that successful artists give to their audience--the gift to reach out and touch everyone in the room from that stage. I didn't even think the crowd cared that she had a rough time with a cough and had to restart a song. She makes even performance glitches charming and endearing.
I pity the venues that don't have a piano onstage for her to work with. The handful of things she did at the grand were enthralling.
And kudos to the Mpls. crowd for being quiet and listening! That was a treat. |

I was surprised by how few people stayed around after the show. There were 400+ in the sold out room, and I'll bet only 15-20 people hung around to meet her.
It was nice, though, more intimate. I heard Dallas was a zoo with a huge line. Immi came out to the show floor here and it was very casual. People just sort of hovered around her like the queen bee she is--got pictures, etc.
One guy gave her what he called a "Goodnight and Go" box which was a cigar box with a light-up diorama inside from the video. Little electric lights, mini Immi, little flowers. It was a trip. He obviously spent a lot of time on it. He had to open it for security at the show 3 times before they let him in with it. |

I second that...it's a beautiful way to end the shows. As she started to say "bye bye bye bye" I felt that I might get a little teary.
She had a couple stops and restarts at the Lawrence show and nobody cared. She didn't hit the high note in the "blood and tears" part of Hide And Seek, so she tried it again and everyone cheered when she got it. Immi seems to wrap the audience around her little finger.  |

The missed notes in Minneapolis were due to a really tight corsette that Immi was wearing. The cute look on Immi's face when she missed the "blood and tears" part was priceless. |

Yeah, I saw the pics of her wearing that corset. She looked really pretty in it, but maybe it wasn't the best choice of attire for a singer. |

| I have to agree with the part about the piano. I saw her at the Dallas show without a piano and the Minn show with one. I cannot describe what an absolute difference it made for the piano-only songs to be played on the real thing. |

I almost stayed home due to an excruciating cluster migraine but after hearing a bit of Zoe Keating's work online I knew I had to go. It was a struggle and my head pounded the whole time but definitely worth the trouble. Zoe's music is remarkable in its zenlike flow and ebb; I was almost in a meditative state, interrupted only by the incessant chatter emanating from the bar. I wish someone had told everyone to quiet down. I was sitting in the back of the room near the bar so I could sit on the couch in the dark back there and not have to stand (due to my headache). It seemed like an eternity before Imogen stepped onto the stage. She was gracious about Zoe's performance which was in tune with the very nice introduction she had given her before the set. I think these two are a very good match. Unfortunately, Zoe flubbed the first song of her set and had to begin again but I was willing to forgive her for it. However, when Imogen also screwed up early on due to a cough, the whole concert took on an entirely different air--like that of a rehearsal. I was a bit miffed initially but later got into the flow of it and enjoyed the informality of her performance. I did think she was charming and amusing but it was hard to hear some of what she said especially from the back of the room and given her accent. My fiance and I thought it was interesting to hear her different interpretations of the tunes we have listened to over and over on the CDs. I was missing some of the drama from those studio-engineered mixes but it created a more personal experience for us. I was able also to gain a better appreciation for Imogen's remarkable voice and the inflections she provides. I also enjoyed hearing her perform at the piano and felt that this provided a nice break from the loud, synth-enhanced tunes. I wish it had gone on a little longer. I would have stayed to meet her but my headache beckoned me home and to bed. Ms. Heap and Ms. Keating are enormously talented and very likeable people besides. I hope they collaborate on a CD in future.
Edited to add: I really feel that this tour is an opportunity for Imogen to show everyone that SHE does EVERYTHING, not just "sing". That's cool but--note to Imogen if you are reading these entries--watch the ego. |

The show was pretty good. There were a few girl behind me that drove me cRaZy. They had this blood curtling scream that sounds like a baby pig being shot in the head with a nail gun.... But other than that, it was a good show.
She had the coughs tonight and messed up on goodnight and go. When she did that breath thingy before the chorus, she suddenly had a coughing fit. It was funny.
I stayed after to see her (which took over a hour for her to come out) and she remembered me from when she came in October. That made my day. ^_^

| I am the lucky one who tuned that rickety old Grand Piano at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. They called me at about 3pm that afternoon saying "doors" open at 7, and could I come over to tune it quickly. Imogen was doing a sound check when I arrived at 5:45, so I sat on the edge of the stage and listened for a while. She saw me there and came over, I explained who I was and she said it would be another 10 minutes. Then she said, "I'm Imogen, by the way." I was quite well aware of that fact by then, and I shyly said "It's my pleasure to meet you". I got to hear some very cool stuff as the soundcheck progressed. I had heard of Imogen but never heard her music. I'm quite a bit more involved in jazz, as a bass player. Anyway, she was extremely nice to talk with, and I wished her well on her tour as I got started tuning the piano. I now wish I would have bought her CD and had her sign it. WHAT A TALENT! I went to iTunes and bought Speak For Yourself later that night. I know I would have enjoyed the live show, but I had other plans. Anyway, good luck on the rest of your tour Immi. ok so my film was over exposed or something and as a result i don't have pictures to share... it's all my fault *cries*.. tis a new camara and i should have done more homework before the show.. but none of that matters now.. imogen put on a fine show in minneapolis.. i attended the chicago show last january and the minneapolis show was quite the improvement.. although i didn't stay to meet imogen.. seeing immi live is really a meeting of sorts whether you stay afterwards or not.. the music is the the thread that brings us all together.. and the varsity theater was completely packed and very intimate.. twas a great venue (minus the occasional feedback and crackling noises via the speakers)
obviously i don't know imogen personally.. however, i get the sense that she really can't be anyone but imogen heap.. there doesnt seem to be a lot of masking involved.. yes.. of course.. we all have protection devices.. we all have multifacated personalites ..and i'm sure imogen is just as complex the next person.. but it seems that immi can only be immi.. whether on stage or off .. like the same immi i saw on david letterman and in concert two times is quite possibly the same immi i would see at her mother's house etc.. does this make sense? i'm rambling about this because i really respect this quality in a person..
imogen lived one of my worst on-stage-fears in minneapolis. --- > coughing while singing! eek! seeing imogen evolve as a performer this past year has really taught me how important it is to roll with the punches and stay in the moment.. this show had a rocky start but imogen didn't let that stop her..and we definitely enjoyed the evening.. <3

id like to thank everyone who attended this show for being such a respectful crowd....(some people appeared to become a bit restless towards the end zoe's set but that's understandable IMO as her music is better suited for a seated bunch) not only were most of us respectful of the performers.. but of each other as well ..
i only wish i had some lovely photos to share with you all..
