obviously, hair dye and hipster jeans isn't as big a decision as cosmetic surgery. and everyone gets it done for their own reasons. sometimes it's not the best decision. and yes, a lot of it is irreversible.

basically my point is what everyone else is saying, i think. it's fine to do what you want with your own body so long as it's for YOUR reasons, it's not going to damage or risk your health, and it's not to please someone else, because that shows you have a self esteem or image problem etc.

do i make sense? i hope so.

janey u do make sense.

i guess ur rite there calaestis. it all gets down to doing it for urself. tho, as its something i would never really consider, i overlooked soem of the points u've made.

i think that if u have that much of an issue about ur self-esteem then it is time to get some therapy (it does work). then u can make a mor self-aware decision about changing urself permanently.

wot about overweight ppl who want to get liposuction or stomach clamping - if done correctly it can be an improvement to both physical and mental health. but, in respect of physical health a good diet never goes astray - tho some ppl do have metabolisms that just keep them fat, so have (in their opinion) no choice but to go for extreme measures..

also, has anyone seen that extreme makover show on MTV, its truly sick!

Yeah, it would be nice to say, "if it makes you happy, go for it!" but...I think people who want cosmetic surgery WON'T be happy with it (unless it changes a serious defect that makes people stare: cleft palatte, NO boobs on a full-grown woman, HUGE boobs that cause back problems, things that make you a real oddity and not just unique). I mean, why are they focusing on something that everyone else considers normal and okay? They have perceptions messed up (which, Iceshaft, I agree with you...is probably based on what the media throws at us...inundated every day with "beautiful" people). If the person is lucky, they will only be fixated on that one thing and getting it "fixed" might get rid of the fixation...but probably not. They'll probably be stuck on how great it looks! For example, there is actually a disorder that some men have referred to as "bigorexia" where they work out all the time because they feel like they are puny, so they keep trying to bulk way up...while the rest of us think they already look like the Hulk. I think there are a lot of these guys at my university and they are really shallow and don't have full lives because they are too busy thinking about working out and checking their muscles in every mirror. Anyhow, I think the people just keep thinking about what they got "fixed' and it still rules their life, the whole idea of looking good and even "perfect".

Even worse, I think some people that get plastic surgery go from one fixation to the next...once they have one part fixed, they start noticing faults in another area. That's really sick. That's just terrible.

Anyway, I couldn't ever get surgery done, unless I were in a terribe accident that marred me...and then I'd just want to look like myself. Body types and things change through the ages as far as what is considered beautiful. For a while, blondes were really hot and I contemplated lightening my hair (I do put some highlights in so it looks like I, the huge school nerd I am, spend more time outside than I actually do). But now, brunettes are having a time to shine. I'm glad that I didn't change my hair! I just feel like if I did surgery it would be to chase what's popular and fashionable...that's fine in clothing, but surgery is permanent (unless you do it again...::shudder:Smile. I just feel like any of those things are a waste of time (including dying hair, unless maybe you're going from gray and you're still pretty young, like 30...some people do that...but again, that's the oddity factor...or if you're going for something wierd, like purple, that's okay, because then your hair has become art and expression, not something to seek beauty).

In short, I think plastic surgery and such should not be used to seek "beauty," or the current definition of "beauty," but to fix oddball problems that really bring stares and things.

Wow. That was long. Sorry Smile I think I'm going to write a song about this.

Been reading the posting about cosmetic surgery and stomach stapling and I had to put my two cents in…

I am 47, and at one time thin and agile and considered myself fat when I weighed 130… I am now post menopausal, and my body has changed radically, in short.. I am considered morbidly obese. I cant tell you how many times I have tried to talk friends I know out of having the stomach surgery, “All you have to do is eat less and exercise more!!” God how arrogant a statement is that especially coming from a fat slob like myself, who was I to talk, and how non supportive I was to my friends. One of my friends lost hundreds of pounds from the surgery and even ran a 5K race. She was once well over 400lbs.

When I saw her run, it was at that time that I decided to take charge and lose weight too, although I only weigh 276 compared to her over 400, I thought, this will be a breeze. Well three years later, several diet plans and a LOADS of exercise and trainers later, my body is still at 276. I couldn’t get it I did everything right and the pounds just would not come off. My boyfriend of five years is an athlete and even he was perplexed, he watched how dedicated I was and there would be happy moments of weight loss, only to be hit with weight gain a few days later.

So, you have to ask yourself… at 47, what is the worst health risk: Obesity, or Surgery?

I chose surgery, and started the whole process in December of 2003 and should go under the knife sometime later this year. I joined two support groups and listened to storied of people who fought like I did to lose. When you’re young you’re metabolism is high and weight loss is far easier. Trust me, I know, I was thin all my life until I hit my mid 30’s and then it snuck up on me. I guess the first thing that I notice was how different people treated me. I was used to people treatng me with respect and all of the sudden I have people literally calling me names to my face or "mooo'ng" at me or telling their children “don’t get fat like that lady” right in front of me. Its as is you don’t exist, you’re a monster they avoid. People fear they will become fat, so in anger they lash out at fat people, because it’s a reality they fear they may have to face themselves.

Closing up on this lovely expose on my personal life, the point I am making is don’t be so judgmental. I see young men and ladies at the mall who are fascinated with their bodies and beauty thinking it will last forever and point out those who are less fortunate, and laugh. Hey car accidents happen, disease happens, babies happen, your body WILL change whether you want it to or not. And if you have the opportunity and money to surgically enhance yourself, then by all means do it. But don’t do anything stupid like having dead skin planted into your lips so you can have lips like Angelina Jolie, and don’t end up like Michael “I’m such a liar I’ve had 200 surgeries on my face” Jackson! Do it to enhance and improve what you’ve got, not to become something you’re not. Yes I’m having my stomach legs breast and arms tightened back up after my surgery. And I plan to celebrate my 50th birthday by running my first 10K race as well as getting married to the man who has loved me literally through thick and thin.

wow, Imofan, thanks for sharing your story with us! i didn't realise you've been trough many difficulties in your your life. you're an experienced person. and yes, the world is cruel when it comes to judging your physical appearance. people see your body and they don't care if you're unhappy, sick or depressed. they don't see what's inside us. all they see is a "fat person, ugly guy, monster etc.". and it doesn't matter if you're great-hearted, intelligent or talented - your looks make the first impression. some people don't even want to know you just because you look unattractive. you know what? f*ck them! these jerks are definitely not worth being our friends. we shouldn't care about what they say or think about us. Imofan, i think you're a lucky person to know someone who's been with you through all these years, no matter if you were fat or not. that's what i call a real friend, someone we can trust, someone who supports us no matter what happens. it's a real treasure! unfortunately it's hard to find such a person and many people don't have a partner who'd give them motivation and sorta power. in my view, all the plastic surgery thing is ok whenever it makes us feel better. but what's the most important is our own self-attitude. if our soul hurts, the plastic surgery won't help us. lately i've watched a documentary about the disease called Body
Dysmorphic Disorder (also known as "dismorphophobia"). People who suffer from dismorphophobia will never achieve happiess or satisfaction, no matter how many plastic operations they have. why? because it's all in their mind. they can't even control it. it has nothing to do with vanity or simple desire of becoming beautiful. these people are sick and they need lots of support. as long as you have a sensible self-attitude, you accept yourself. the point is to feel good with your body, not caring about the others' opinion. if you think you need a surgeon's help, do it - but do it for yourself, not because all that pressure of beauty-obsessed world. if you're like:"hey, i know i'm not the prettiest but i feel great i i think i'm a cool person", the others will respect you for sure. when people see you're apologetic for your existance, they don't respect you.
in general, everyone's got his own story and his own reasons and it's hard too say when plastic surgery is needed and when it's not needed.
Anyway, i'm glad you didn't break down and you found strengh to change your life, Imofan. i hope you're happy now! Smile

Hey I'm not suffering by no means, I’m a pretty joyful person with a killer sense of humor. Who would fall so deeply in love with me and stick by me for 5 years if I wasn’t? Those who judge me for how I physically appear don’t hurt or bother me, they annoy me more than anything else, like little gnats.... that’s their problem, not mine.

Thanks for the feedback frosti… smart, very smart response.

Remember… There is no greater revenge than success Wink

welcome to the forum - craxy coolidge and khakijorsen.

heya imofan, thanx for sharing ur story and for giving us an "insider" point of view. Wot u have done is investigate the facts, get support and by the sounds of it considered your options. I wish you luck in making the changes that you are attempting to make.

I hope that you are able to do that 10K run in the timeframe you are giving yourself.

You are also so right about the psychology of fear and the shame that people heap onto others who do not fit the perceived norm, and I disagree frosti - you can be the most confident person in the world and be happy with yourself, but ultimately it is other people's fears and self-loathing that are going to be taken out on those that they fear that they will become, or have been (say that out loud it does make sense, I think)

I also saw a doco recently on people perceptions of self - and in the doco one women was given a picture of herself (slightly distorted) and had to bring it back to how she viewed herself. She viewed herself as being about 5 pounds over her actual weight and when she changed it to be the way she wanted to be she was only 2 pounds over her ideal weight. People's minds can so easily distort reality.

lol

Welcome to the message board Lauzzy,

Sorry we got off track, that happens from time to time. Why dont you help us get back to the core subject by letting us read your comments on Imogen Heap, her music, style and the elucidation of her art?

getting off track is great coz it makes us think and it provokes discussion, sometimes it's inspiring. as Immi fans we can know each other better, as Madonna said in her song:"music makes the people come together" Smile this time it's Immi's music which made us come together. it's a great deal!! Smile
