Considering that we're halfway through the album already, I'd like to know your thoughts on the 7 songs we've heard so far:

Xizi She Knows
Minds Without Fear
Neglected Space
Me The Machine
Lifeline
You Know Where To Find Me
Propeller Seeds

(my personal top with Propeller Seeds as the least favorite)
I like them all a lot, I honestly do, but I don't feel as much of a connection with them as I did with songs from Ellipse. I don't know what's missing. Besides Minds Without Fear, everything sounds too peaceful (even Lifeline, regardless of its dark theme). I get it, Immi is happy right now, and it's reflecting in her music, and I'm glad for her, but I'd like to hear more energy and maybe darkness for a change. It also feels like Imogen focuses too much on her surroundings and technology (just my opinion, it's her album, though, so if she feels like it's the best way to do it, then more power to her Very Happy), and tries too hard to write very complex and poetic lyrics, which is great on one hand. On the other hand, simple lyrics can also be beautiful (SFY has some pretty simple lyrics, and they still sound great), I just don't want her to overthink that stuff. That said, we still have 5-6 songs to go, so I hope that future songs will bring some diversity. The album sounds great so far, but I feel like it could be better.

Surely there's some 'darkness' in Neglected Space and Me The Machine?

I do like all the songs so far - some more than others, obviously - and I think Lifeline and Me The Machine, at any rate, are among her best work.

I'm not so sure how well it will all hang together as an album. There is not much variety of tempo in the seven we have heard so far, and I hope the final set will include a few more up-tempo numbers. But presumably not the 'Bhutan' song or the one with Eric Whitacre!

Finally someone who feels the way I do! I love the songs, don't get me wrong, but there's just something that keeps me from connecting with them like I did with all her other songs. I've been thinking about it a lot and I still can't think of why this problem occurs inside my imogen-loving brain. Is it the lack of DnB? Is it the lack of epicness? I don't know but I do know that I feel exactly like you regarding the 'lightness' of the songs. I think we need us some dark, electronic, upbeat DnB song about something epic (like 2-1, The Walk or Glittering Clouds). I'd love for it to happen, but sadly, it doesn't seem like the project's heading that way. Sad

I am kind of up in the air with the songs she has released. Some I enjoy and some are nice to listen to but none of them grab me.

I just noticed that on the "Listening Chair" heapsong page, it says:
Quote:
Come August 2012, I will write the final song for my current album...

Does this mean it's only going to be an 8 song album or am I wrong? Maybe James knows more about this.

On the question 'how many songs are left', from various things Immi has said I think there will indeed be another 5:

Entanglement - originally recorded for a film, but not used, so she is keeping it for the album

A song (or instrumental?) to be made using an RJDJ app. I think Immi said somewhere it would be tied in with the Olympics, which suggests a date of late July or early August

A song (or instrumental) from the Bhutan film project

The Listening Chair - to be arranged for choir accompaniment by Eric Whitacre. The world premiere performance has already been announced for the Proms concerts in late August.

That leaves one other aong, which I haven't been able to identify. It could be something else she has already recorded - there are several collabs that haven't been released yet - or maybe she will quickly record a piano instrumental.

I remember hearing about the first one... but don't remember hearing about the other ones. THanks for updating me. I'm hoping some of these songs are faster than what has been released.

I feel like I've been disconnected, but that's probably because the songs are being made in set times and as separate projects. The songs themselves are fantastic!

Um, what's so hard to grasp there? The fact that some people genuinely dislike something about some of the songs and think that there are things that could be improved? Confused I am not saying that the new material is bad by any means, I've been listening to it a lot, I just think that it doesn't always live up to the standard Immi set for herself & lacks diversity a little bit.

i'm not saying you're wrong. i just don't get what the lack of bass has to do with the improvement of a song... just my opinion

Because mixing is very important. If the song noticeably lacks some frequencies, then it's not a good thing. Bass also adds more punch when needed, so when I listen to the ending of Xizi or Lifeline (the supposedly powerful part of those songs), it doesn't sound as powerful as it should.
Let's just pretend that certain frequencies are musical instruments: bass - drums, middle - guitar, high - violin. If there's no balance between them (i.e. violin & guitar too loud, drums very faint the background, almost inaudible), then it will reflect on quality. Same with frequencies - you need to make sure that every frequency is properly balanced with the rest. Of course it's a matter of preference, that's why if you bring a song to mastering to different engineers, you'll probably get very different results.
