Songs that annoy me the most are not ones i truly hate, but ones that have the potential to be amazing, yet do not reach my expectations. I know Imogen is perfectly in her own right to produce a song how she pleases, but i feel the 'lack of experience' she had back in 1997/1998 means some songs on imegaphone haven't been exploited to their potential and are (obviously) not of the same standard of her S4Y days and have more flaws.
I feel she would have taken 'whatever' in a completely different direction if she was to 'remix' it today. The riff and beat are so good, i'm thinking she would have probably layered it up more nicely if revised today and used it as more of a base for the entire song. My favourite part of this song is the bar from 36 seconds, the sounds at 38 and 42 are so funky and amazing, why didn't she use this throughout?? - that is the most frustrating part.
Basically i thought this song was great untill i reached the chorus, although i am warming to it now, i think the lyrics are so annoying and weak here and once i reached the random out of place bridge, i skipped the track the first time.
Maybe i should just try to accept the song for what it is and realise her style was different back then. Does anyone think similarly about this song or do you not believe in seeing flaws in her music and accept it for what it is? |

I'm not sure as I don't have the information here with me, but if I remember correctly "Whatever" is not solely an Imogen Heap composition. I believe she co-authored that song with another collaborator. Stylistically, it is a little different than her other work; even that of iMegaphone. For example, the arrangement and synth solo in "Whatever" is rather different from what is heard in other Immi songs.
iMeg is a little different from later work, but some of the material I actually prefer to later compositions. BTW I like "Whatever". |

SteveD: yes, the music of Whatever (and also Rake It In) is credited to Imogen Heap and Fil Eisler.
For a different and later treatment of the song there is of course the piano version in the iTunes concert. |

| Thanks David; and in the live iTunes concert version, Imogen explains the background/inspriation for the song also, which is always interesting to hear. |

| I always loved the production on Whatever. I think the first verse and chorus are absolutely perfect. I love the part of the verse where it's just her and the beat, and the bass line and guitar in the first chorus sound brilliant together. I find the bridge a bit lacking, but for me it's one of my favourites from iMeg. |

Whatever's prolly my favorite on iMeg...maybe on par with Come Here Boy/Shine for me. Though I think I love the demo version of Whatever best, which is reeeeaaally different--has a totally different feel.
I think my thing with iMeg was that it took me a bit to warm up to it, and Whatever was the one that first got me into iMeg...it's got that kind of funky groove to it and all those techy slidey soundy things and that one moment around 2:40 with that daoooo always made me smile. And the demo version gave me a new appreciation because you can hear pieces of the released version, but with that acoustic guitar and a lot more of her voice doing background vocals...it's interesting. And the bridge is completely different.
Whatever's the song with three faces. Original, release, and live. I like 'em all... |

| I agree with Steve, is the demo version of Whatever available somewhere, or at least able to listen to on the internet? I know it's on the JP re-release of iMeg, but is it somewhere on the depths of the internet? Anywhere!?!? |

I could put it to some pics and slap it on YouTube if anybody wants. It was a happy surprise I got when I found a Jap release for I think twelve bucks on Amazon. I was in it for Airplane, but I got the Whatever demo too.
Not right this moment, mind, since I'm going to bed, but I can put it up later if you want.

Thank youuuuu!
I love finding hidden gems like this - old songs by Immi you've never heard of before, it's like finding a newly released track
A very different take on "whatever", I must say, but I quite like it. Though the original is better in my opinion. |

I was curious to know who the mysterious Fil Eisler was, so I looked him up. Apparently he is a Czech-born bass player and guitarist. See here:
http://www.mfiles.co.uk/composers/iZLER.htm
Presumably he was involved in the iMeg recording sessions. |

Thank-you for posting that version of Whatever on YouTube Bone Dry! It was very interesting to hear that version. It has quite a different feel.
I like all three versions of Whatever, but I think I like the original version best. |
