Hey, I thought I'd start a thread for all the professional reviews of Ellipse. To start off with, we have one from the Guardian:
The Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/aug/14/imogen-heap-cd-review
Quote: London songwriter Imogen Heap is better known for her skill in employing the internet to push her career than for her actual music. She's got hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers and MySpace friends (though not, inexplicably, the sales to match), but the only songs that might be familiar to non-fans are the 2007 Grammy-nominated Can't Take it In and Hide and Seek, which made it on to The OC. This beguiling third album deserves to be her breakthrough moment, though the absence of an obvious Hide and Seek-style focal point may hinder its chances. Ellipse is questing and musically inventive, using electronics as its foundation, but fleshing out the bleeps and clicks with everything from the chirp of jayhawks (on Little Bird) to an Indian flautist (Tidal). An understated vocalist, Heap sounds by turns warm and inviting and mistily detached - and her resemblance to Alanis Morissette on the track Earth cannot go unremarked. Lovely stuff. 4/5 stars |

Some good and some bad...
Gigwise:
Quote: As I’ve said already, the production standard is staggeringly high (perhaps a reason why she has recently teamed up to assist Mika with a song on his new album – make of that what you will). At some points, it can seem a little too much, as layer upon layer continues to build and bits of music are consequently lost. You are occasionally left wondering how decent the vocals would sound if you took away the numerous effects streaming through them. The answer… is pretty damn good.
Check out the rest of the review here!
Contact Music:
Quote: Where to start with an album that sounds like its been released 7-8 years too late. Production sounds cheap and seems full of gimmicks from start to finish. So many tracks on Ellipse sounds like they're geared up for being background music for soppy scenes in teen dramas, so it's no surprise to find that past work has been used during an episode of the O.C. These flowery instances are never more evident than in Want It Out with its collection of lyrics about 'time healing everything' and how about 2-1 which croons about 'dying to know what's in your head' which just end up churning out the usual age old clichés of a ballad. As if these lyrics weren't bad enough what's then served up on Bad Body Double is just plain hideous. A song which is basically about looking in the mirror and not liking what you see, provides some of the most cringe worthy lyrics in recent history 'Hi there to my bad body double/I've got bad body double trouble' - 'sometimes I manage to lose her and shake her at a bar or a gym for five minutes' it really is no surprise that this is an original concept.

I liked this review for its track-by-track descriptions. Beautifully dense sentences
http://www.sound-screen.co.uk/index.php/2009/08/track-by-track-imogen-heap-ellipse-preview-review/
Quote:
5. ‘Swoon’ – a pop injection in the album, a love song with a positive vibe that soars and bubbles under the surface. Tumbling whirly gigging melodies; “My world begins to dance”.
6. ‘Tidal’ – An orchestral intro that bursts into guitar melodies and strings, blended with electro vibes. Pure vocals that echo tidal shapes and develop into more positive and lively melodies that pulsate into rock melodies at the end. Probably the rockiest Imogen Heap has ever experimented with.
10. ‘Aha!’ – Darts and shoots in all directions; a creative structure that peaks and drops. A multi-tonal track that builds into a distorted fairground sound.
13. ‘Half Life’- Closing tracks should leave a lasting impression and this is a subtle and endearing performance that draws the album to a perfect sugar-coated close, without the frills of synths and vocal effects. “The only way out as you disappear in a puff of smoke”. |

| The contact music one is pure harshness. Had the person reviewing actually heard Immi's stuff before? As that comes across as you had someone who's used to heavy rock being forced to sit down and listen to it. Immi's music is supposed to have fun elements to it... hmmm... |

well ... this sam marland guy ( or maybe sam is a gal ? ) , who wrote the review for contact music should be asked to return his ( or her ) promo copy of "ellipse" as he ( or she ) quite obviously doesn't like it @ all !
anyway ... he ( or she ) should definitely be x-ed off the promo list in the future ! |

I wouldn't feel too bad about the contact music one. I don't want to sound like a defensive fan, but this is just SO poorly written.
He didn't get the track name right:
Quote: These flowery instances are never more evident than in Want It Out
He has trouble with subject/verb agreement:
Quote: So many tracks on Ellipse sounds like they're geared up for being background music
The review contains assertions that are demonstrably false and show a lack of research:
Quote: "But just as Frou Frou never really got off the ground, Ellipse pretty much suffers the same fate. "
And his phrasing is just awkward:
Quote: " A recording career that's spanned 11 years, has seen her originally release a solo album"
Quote: A search for redeeming features within Ellipse however is no easy task, single First Train Home with its atmospheric intro and fairly likeable chorus is one of very few.
Oh, and he apparently ran out of commas:
Quote: Likewise Aha at least offers some energy and intent but its too little too late for an album that couldn't be more irrelevant if it tried.
And.... who has ever even heard of this site? |

What the fuck is 'want it out?' It's wait it out douche bag! At least get it right before you B**** about it! you know I agree. Not everyone has to like the same thing. But when reviewing and critiquing an artists work you can at least try to show a little class and respect for a person who has put her life into that piece of "original pop teen music." I mean honestly what were you expecting? Songs about sex and rape? Do all songs have to be about that to be a hit?
Some people can be truly rude and for those who are like this I must say F off!
You show no respect for others why should we show respect for you?
******************************************************
End Rant Here:
Sorry if I upset anyone on here but that's just the way I feel. When I see someone who is clearly talented but is getting utterly flamed I get upseat. |

I find that review to be so funny. It's like the most pessimistic person sat down and wrote a review. Of course, I'm also pretty sure this reviewer is a fifth grader. There's no way an adult trying to be some sort of journalist could possibly write so badly.
Well, in that case, I hope he/she gets every song from "Ellipse" stuck in his/her head everyday for a year. |

Haha, I hadn't realised the contactmusic review was up here as well.
http://www.covermeinink.com/?fn_mode=comments&fn_id=52
I posted about it on CMII and there have been loads of people disagreeing with it, being angry about it and ridiculing it. It's the most hilarious thing I've read in ages in any case. It's so bad, I think my door could have written a better review.
I do think it's a good sign that that's the only bad review I've seen so far, though! |

That entire review is just harsh. I don't expect everyone to love Immi or her music but this reviewer is pretty harsh about the album. Sounds like someone who isn't familier with Immi or her work at all. Sounds like this person got stuck reviewing the album rather than actually wanting to do it.
Oh well, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and how they decide to express them. Besides most of the other reviews I've seen have been pretty positive about the album. |

It's not quite a review, but we just posted my article about the heaptweetup and it obviously includes a lot of talk about the music and what Immi said about each track.
Check it out here http://www.covermeinink.com/?content=articles&artid=4

| I really hope you guys aren't planning to go apeshit over every negative review posted. Furthermore, it's from contactmusic, one of the most unreliable entertainment sites on the web. |

If by apeshit you mean stalking the reviewer and flinging poo at him/her every time he/she leaves the house...nooo...*grabs pet monkey and hides behind a tree*
To monkey: We'll be safe here. You do your thing just as soon as the reviewer comes outside...
Energy, I loved your article! It was very well written and only built up even more anticipation inside of me!

Well You know one negative reiview no. BUT when a person just Epicly FLAMES an artist. Yes. As I said earlier. You can show a bit of class when giving a negative reivew. |

Well, I think I'm more offended at it as a fan of the English language rather than a fan of Imogen's. And yes, it's already been noted to consider the source. |

has anyone else read the Alternative Press review. It's so effing retarded. I came across it reading their excuse of a magazine out of boredom at Borders. I think it was a 2 star review.
Then again, why am I expecting much out of a magazine that's too obsessed with the same cookie-cutter emo shit it neverendingly flogs? |

I find it funny they'd bother to review it. I mean, they're clearly not the target demographic, I think.
I think it's important to remember that the sign of a good artist is to NOT be universally loved. If you are, then more than likely you're making something compromised and bland. |
